Ok guys, night 6 of Chanukah is here. It makes me sad to think we’re almost finished with this beautiful holiday! Tonight we’re at a family party at my in-laws with all the cousins! So, I prepared something really fun for all the kids (and some adults) to do!
This recipe is a little trickier than the others that I’ve posted so far, but it’s such a special Chanukah activity and snack that I really didn’t want to skip it! In addition to being a few more steps than my normal recipes, this one also requires a little more time. So bear with me and plan ahead…
We’re making Paint Your Own Chanukah Cookies! It’s and activity and cookie all in one!
We make a sugar cookie dough, and I have an amazing recipe for you from @naomi_tgis with no butter or margarine (!!). We cut out Chanukah shapes (obviously!) and we frost them with plain white royal icing.
Once they’re set, overnight, the fun begins, and we paint the cookies with gel food coloring and paint brushes (used only for food).
Since we were travelling a bit to get to the party I decided to make the paint available on a separate cookie for each kid. But painting with gel colors works perfectly on these!
I made sure to have enough small paintbrushes and set up each kid with a decorating station of their own. A small piece of parchment paper, a paintbrush, and some cookies. I set up a tester for my kids a few nights ago to make sure it worked and it was perfect! Can’t wait to see how the cousins love it tonight!

¾ cup sugar
¼ cup soy milk
½ cup oil
2 tsp baking powder
3 cups flour
3 Tblps Wilton meringue powder
4 cups icing sugar
6 Tblps warm water
Gel Food Coloring
- Mix all the wet ingredients together and then add in the flour and baking powder.
- Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead very lightly for just a minute or two.
- Roll out the dough in between two sheets of parchment paper.
- Cut out your Chanukah shapes and bake at 350F for 10 minutes.
- Let cool.
- In a food processor mix icing sugar and meringue powder, with 2 Tablespoons of water.
- Add in the rest of the water gradually.
- Mix for 10 minutes.
- Place in a piping bag fitted with a #2 tip and coupler.
- Cover each cookie with a thin layer of royal icing.
- Let sit overnight to set.
- Set up decorating stations for each kid and have fun!!
